10 Day Sri Lanka Itinerary + Free Google Sheets Template

Matt - October 7, 2026

For a first ten-day trip to Sri Lanka, I would spend one night in Negombo, two in Sigiriya, one in Kandy, two in Ella, and three in Unawatuna. This sequence combines the Cultural Triangle's rock fortress and painted cave temples, Kandy's living Buddhist heritage, hill-country walks, and a south-coast stay with a full day in Galle Fort. Road transfers connect the five bases, with most of days 2, 5, and 7 set aside for moving between regions.
The itinerary is also available as a free Sri Lanka Google Sheets itinerary template. Copy it to customize the dates, activities, lodging, and costs for your trip.

Itinerary Outline

  • Day 1: Negombo. Arrive at Bandaranaike International Airport and settle into an airport-area or beach stay.
  • Day 2: Dambulla and Sigiriya. Travel inland, visit the cave temples, and reach your Sigiriya base.
  • Day 3: Sigiriya. Give the fortress, gardens, and museum a full morning, with a flexible afternoon.
  • Day 4: Kandy. Continue to the city for its lake and Sacred Tooth temple.
  • Day 5: Hill country to Ella. Use the day for the road journey and an easy arrival evening.
  • Day 6: Ella. Walk Little Adam's Peak and visit the Nine Arch Bridge viewpoints.
  • Day 7: Unawatuna. Travel to the south coast and check into your beach base.
  • Day 8: Galle Fort. Explore the historic streets, lighthouse area, shops, and cafes.
  • Day 9: South-coast free day. Enjoy Unawatuna or choose a local alternative.
  • Day 10: Departure. Arrange the airport transfer around your confirmed flight.
This is a ten-day, nine-night plan. It suits travelers who enjoy a varied trip and are comfortable with several substantial road journeys. For a slower holiday, give the coast or hill country another night and extend the trip. An early departure flight may call for the final night near the airport; decide that before booking the coastal stay.

Best Time and Pacing

December through March is a useful starting window for this combination of inland sights and the southwest coast. Sri Lanka's official weather guidance describes the southwest as particularly appealing in the December-February period, while October and November can bring heavy inter-monsoon showers across the island. Hill-country weather needs its own check, even during a popular coastal season.
Put Sigiriya's climb and Ella's walks early in the day, then keep their afternoons adaptable. Rain, cloud, heat, and your own walking pace can change the order of outdoor visits. Pack a light layer for Ella as well as clothing suited to warm coastal days.
Two Sigiriya nights give you a complete fortress morning after the arrival day. One Kandy night fits a focused temple-and-lake visit; two nights make room for the botanical gardens and a gentler onward journey. Two Ella nights leave one full local day, and three Unawatuna nights give you separate Galle and beach days.

Day 1: Arrive and Stay in Negombo

Start by checking your arrival airport and flight time. This plan assumes Bandaranaike International Airport at Katunayake. Arrange your first transfer with your lodging or an agreed driver, and confirm where you will meet after arrivals.
Negombo is a practical first-night base for travelers who want a beach-area introduction before heading inland. A short walk near Negombo Beach Park and dinner close to your accommodation are enough for the arrival afternoon. If you land late, an airport-area hotel works well and keeps the next morning straightforward.
Treat the first day's sample times in the itinerary as flexible. Leave room for immigration, baggage, the transfer, and rest. Book the first night's room with your actual arrival hour in mind, especially when an overnight flight reaches Sri Lanka early in the morning.

Day 2: Dambulla Cave Temples and Sigiriya

Travel from Negombo toward Dambulla, with the cave temple as the main sightseeing stop before reaching Sigiriya. Arrange the day as a transfer with a visit included, and agree with your driver where you will eat and how luggage will be stored during the temple stop.
Dambulla's cave temples are known for their painted interiors and Buddha images across five caves. The stair approach and time inside make this a substantial visit. Wear clothing that covers shoulders and knees, carry water, and follow local instructions about shoes and photography.
Check the current ticket office, opening arrangements, and access before setting out. Your arrival time depends on the road journey, so keep the afternoon visit flexible. If your flight arrived very late the previous evening, discuss a later departure and adjust the sightseeing accordingly.
Continue to your Sigiriya lodging for two nights. Choose a property with convenient access to the fortress and a comfortable place to spend a relaxed afternoon. Confirm its exact location with your driver before booking; the accommodation setting has a real effect on how you use your time here.

Day 3: Sigiriya Fortress, Gardens, and Museum

Begin with Sigiriya Rock Fortress. The visit brings together landscaped gardens, the steep rock ascent, and palace remains at the summit. Give it a full morning, including pauses on the way up and time to understand the gardens at ground level.
Check opening and access with the Central Cultural Fund before choosing your start time. Its official e-ticket service explains the current purchase process and lists single-entry tickets. Collect the ticket at the site's counter with the order receipt, bring any documents required for your ticket category, and allow time at the entrance. An early start is a practical choice for the heat; comfortable footwear and water matter throughout the climb.
Sigiriya involves stairs and exposed sections. Travelers who prefer a ground-level visit can focus on the gardens and museum, after confirming the admission and accessible areas. The museum helps place the palace, landscaping, and archaeological discoveries in context.
Have lunch near your base and keep the afternoon open for rest, time in your lodging's grounds, or a local activity arranged through your accommodation. The morning is the day's main experience. A flexible afternoon is also useful if the weather changes the timing of the climb.

Day 4: Kandy Lake and the Sacred Tooth Temple

Continue south to Kandy and arrange a bag drop at your accommodation. A lakeside walk is a pleasant first look at the city and pairs naturally with an evening temple visit.
The Sri Dalada Maligawa, or Sacred Tooth temple, is an active place of Buddhist worship. Visitors encounter the temple complex, devotional activity, and the setting associated with the Sacred Tooth Relic. Allow time for screening, tickets, and the visitor flow around ritual periods.

The temple's official FAQ currently lists daily opening from 5:30 a.m. to 8 p.m., with the evening ritual window from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Check that guidance again for your date. Wear clothing covering shoulders and knees, remove shoes where directed, and follow instructions inside the complex. Ritual timing is a useful planning reference, and attendance depends on the arrangements in place when you visit.
If you arrive early and enjoy gardens, substitute the lake afternoon with the Royal Botanic Gardens at Peradeniya. Its orchid and palm collections make this a worthwhile garden-focused visit. Confirm the transport, ticket, and last-entry arrangements, and leave time to return to Kandy for the temple.

Day 5: Travel Through the Hill Country to Ella

Set aside the day for the road journey to Ella, with lunch and rest stops agreed in advance. Ask the driver to check the current road route and conditions. Once you arrive, settle in and choose dinner near your lodging or Ella's town center.
The hill-country railway is an appealing optional experience, and the operating section needs careful checking. The current Sri Lanka Railways notice confirms that Badulla-Nanu Oya services resumed after repairs to the Ambewela-Nanu Oya section. That notice does not establish a complete direct Kandy-Ella service.
For a rail variation, confirm the actual stations served on your date, the departure, reserved seats where offered, and transfers at both ends. Use the official seat-reservation service for the services it offers. A road transfer remains the default in this itinerary, and you can add an operating hill-country segment once its connections fit your day.

Day 6: Little Adam's Peak and Nine Arch Bridge

Start with Little Adam's Peak, also called Mini Adam's Peak. The walk combines tea-estate surroundings with elevated views across the hills. Allow roughly two hours for the walking portion and pauses, plus your travel to the trail entrance. Expect steps and uneven ground, and check trail conditions after wet weather.
Then visit the Nine Arch Bridge viewpoints. The curved railway viaduct sits between Ella and Demodara, with forest and hillside scenery around its arches. Plan access by local road and public walking paths; remain clear of operational tracks and follow any current access restrictions. Train times should come from the operator's current schedule.

Give these two stops separate blocks, including the local transfer and walking approaches. Return to Ella town for lunch, then keep the afternoon for cafes, shops, or rest. If rain affects the morning, move the outdoor visits to the clearest part of the day after checking local conditions.
Cafe Chill on Wellawaya Road is one central option for a meal or cafe break. Its menu includes Sri Lankan and international dishes. Check the current menu and opening arrangements directly, particularly if you have dietary requirements. It is included as an undated choice in the itinerary so you can use it for lunch, dinner, or a flexible afternoon.
Travelers keen on a longer hike can add another Ella day for Ella Rock. A guided walk is a useful option when you want help with route finding and local conditions. The waterfall viewpoint at Ravana Falls is another possible local outing; use safe viewing areas and follow access guidance after heavy rain.

Day 7: Travel to Unawatuna

Leave Ella for the south coast and reserve the day for the journey. Confirm the pickup, luggage capacity, meal break, and latest road conditions with your driver. Your first coastal evening can be a beach walk and dinner after checking in.
Unawatuna works well for this plan because it combines a beach stay with access to nearby Galle. Book three nights in one property, then use local transfers for the Fort day. Check how you reach the beach from your room, whether the property has steps, and whether you prefer the main beach area or a quieter setting farther from its dining strip.
Check local sea conditions throughout the stay. Swimming, snorkeling, and other water activities depend on the conditions on the day; ask about flags, currents, and the operator's arrangements before deciding.

Day 8: A Full Day in Galle Fort

Take a local transfer into Galle Fort and explore on foot. This is a living heritage district with residential streets, churches, shops, and cafes inside its coastal fortifications.

Begin with the streets around the lighthouse and waterfront, then work back through the interior lanes. The Dutch Reformed Church and All Saints' Church offer architectural points of interest; check visitor access and worship schedules if you want to enter. Shade and cafe breaks make the walking day more comfortable.
Have lunch around the Old Dutch Hospital area, then leave the afternoon for shops, a guided heritage walk, or a museum after confirming its opening. Choose the experiences that interest you and allow time to explore the lanes between them.
For textiles, bags, and gifts, Barefoot's Galle Fort store is at 41 Pedler Street. It makes a convenient browsing stop while walking the interior lanes. Check the store's current hours for your travel date; it is also listed among the template's undated options.
Return to Unawatuna for the evening. Travelers who especially enjoy architecture and restaurants can choose to stay within the Fort instead, making the beach a day trip. That changes the character of the coastal stay while keeping the same regional base.

Day 9: Beach Time and Local Choices

Keep this day flexible for Unawatuna's beach, a leisurely lunch, and time at your accommodation. It also gives you room to revisit Galle, move the Fort outing if weather affected day 8, or book a local activity after checking current conditions.
For a water activity, ask the operator about the location, expected conditions, equipment, cancellation policy, and pickup. For a land-based day, choose a neighborhood walk, shopping, or another cafe-and-heritage afternoon in Galle. Keeping the choices close to your coastal base makes it easy to adapt the day.

Day 10: Airport Transfer and Departure

Work backward from your airline's check-in requirement, then add the driver-confirmed road time and a disruption buffer. The airport transfer is the day's priority, and the departure time in the Sheet is only an editable placeholder.
For an early flight, use an airport-area overnight at the end of day 9 and adjust the Unawatuna booking to two nights. For a later flight, agree on a morning pickup that leaves a comfortable margin. Confirm the airport and terminal details from your ticket, and check road conditions before departure.

Where to Stay

  • Negombo or the airport area: one night. Choose around the flight arrival and your first morning's pickup.
  • Sigiriya: two nights. A convenient fortress base with room to relax between visits suits this plan.
  • Kandy: one night. Compare lake-and-temple access with vehicle pickup, luggage drop, and room comfort.
  • Ella: two nights. Central lodging makes meals convenient; a hillside stay calls for checking steps and vehicle access.
  • Unawatuna: three nights. Choose beach access and dining convenience. Galle Fort is an alternative for a heritage-focused coastal stay.
These are lodging areas, with room selection left to your budget and preferences. Once you choose hotels, confirm pickup points and luggage arrangements on the transfer days. Extra nights in Kandy or Ella are particularly useful for travelers who want more garden time or hiking.

Transport, Entry, and Booking Checklist

For this five-base trip, a prearranged driver is a practical way to connect the main stops. The tourism board's authorized tourist-driver directory is a starting point for finding options. Ask for a written quote covering the route, vehicle, luggage, driver overnight arrangements, tolls, airport legs, and cancellation terms.
Book your nine nights after checking the international flights. Then confirm the long transfers, Sigiriya and Dambulla access, temple guidance, and any optional train reservation. Local taxis or tuk-tuks can handle short outings where appropriate; agree on the trip and fare before setting off.
Check official immigration and entry requirements for your passport before travel. Keep booking confirmations accessible and review current travel-condition guidance, including weather-related road disruption. Recheck regional forecasts and attraction access close to departure.

Optional Changes to the Itinerary

  • More gardens and city time: add a second Kandy night for Peradeniya and a more relaxed temple visit.
  • More hiking: add an Ella night for Ella Rock, then keep Little Adam's Peak and the bridge on their own local day.
  • A rail experience: insert a currently operating hill-country segment after confirming dated services and station transfers.
  • A heritage-focused coast stay: sleep in Galle Fort and visit Unawatuna for the beach.
  • An early flight: move the last night to the airport area and adjust the coastal stay before booking.
The undated choices in the template give you a starting set of alternatives. Choose the additions that fit your interests, season, and available nights, then review the transfer days again.

Sri Lanka Itinerary FAQ

Is Ten Days Enough for Sri Lanka?

Ten days fits this focused Cultural Triangle, hill-country, and south-coast itinerary. It includes several travel days and nine nights across five bases. Add nights in Kandy or Ella for more local time, or extend the coastal stay for a longer beach holiday.

What Is the Best Order for These Stops?

Start near the arrival airport, travel inland to Dambulla and Sigiriya, continue through Kandy to Ella, then finish on the south coast. Confirm the final airport transfer against your flight before booking the last night.

Can I Take the Train From Kandy to Ella?

Check the actual operating route for your date with Sri Lanka Railways. Its current restoration notice confirms Badulla-Nanu Oya service, which does not confirm the entire Kandy-Ella route. This plan uses a road transfer, with a train segment available to add once its stations, seats, and connections are verified.

Should I Stay in Unawatuna or Galle Fort?

Choose Unawatuna for a beach-based finish with Galle as a local outing. Choose Galle Fort if historic streets, architecture, and dining are your main coastal interests, then make the beach a day trip.

Is the Google Sheets Itinerary Free?

Yes. You can copy the itinerary, change its dates and activities, and keep using the basic spreadsheet for free. Travel Mapper's map view and other add-on tools are available in the seven-day full-feature trial, then through a subscription.
